The ‘Shroppie’ is beloved of narrowboaters, and it’s easy to see why; after the urban midlands waterways, we’re now in the country and the canal is wide and open in places and wide and overhung with arching trees in others, an abundance of (sadly closed) pubs next to the towpath and friendly boaters and locals - a better place to sit through Engand’s 2nd lockdown is hard to imagine.

We joined at Autherley Junction, taking an extreme right off the ineloquently named Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal and through a lock that was no more than 20 cm deep (apparently it divided canal water ownership back in the day) and onto a wholly different experience.
